Tapestry of Grace

Updated: Jun 23

For the past seven years, the spine of our home school has been an invaluable resource I discovered in 2014 called Tapestry of Grace. I was at my first ever home education convention, soaking up every possible bit of knowledge, when I attended a seminar by Marcia Somerville. During her one-hour talk, she answered all of the questions and concerns I had with my current classical co-op community, and offered something better, something that made total sense to me.

Her philosophy of classical education included deep discussions with your teens analyzing the characters of historical figures and the worldviews of classic authors. This is what I had been looking for, but was too young in my journey to put into words. Thankfully, my oldest child was just entering the 5th grade, so I had time to figure out this Tapestry of Grace.

Tapestry of Grace is a K-12, multi-subject, living books humanities curriculum, divided into four years, which span from the beginning of time to the modern age. Each slice of history is organized into a 1, 2, or usually, 3-week unit study, that gives the students a big picture of that place, event or period of time using history and literature books, maps, activities, in-depth discussion and family read-alouds.

While it seems intimidating at first, Tapestry of Grace is a gem worth spending the time, money and energy required to use it. Like anything, you get what you pay for and you get out what you put in. Now they even have "spools" that allow you to try out one subject and level at a time. In 11 years of using Tapestry, I have not been able to find anything that comes close to replacing it in our home school.

Check it out and please don't hesitate to ask for help, when discovering Tapestry of Grace for yourself. If you give up too easily, your family will never benefit from the most incredible curriculum available, and the best part is the high school years!
